NZ in a state of war with itself?

Posted by shiania on June 20, 2008

Ok, so the fur in my head seems to have passed long enough for me to have an opinion on something. Yeah, ok, I can hear it now, “Not another opinion of hers,” but too bad here it comes anyway.

Prices are escalating on our shopping trolley’s, it is cheaper to buy a small island than to put petrol in the car, crime is taking a fair hike in the stats because of the ever increasing prices being landed upon us, and that is just the beginning. What I would like to rant about this time is the crime aspect.

We are on a benefit and have had a hell of a time trying to get our finances in order since both of us having to leave the workforce. However, over the past few months things have been slowing coming more financially viable for us. In short, it is a damned hard struggle for us to make ends meet, but we do it somehow.

To be completely honest with you, thoughts of robbing a bank have passed through my head from time to time over the past couple of months. Then I think about what would happen to my family should I get caught. Simply put, the children would lose a devoted mother who would do anything for them, and my partner would have to play the role of both parents. It is hard enough when there are two parents when you have a disfunctional family, let alone trying to make it all on your own as a sole parent. I know this because before my partner arrived I was trying to balance everything on my own. I worked, sometimes, up to 3 jobs to try to make enough money to make ends meet. And then I would have to return home to my hectic and distructive family life.

When I have enough strength to be able to talk about my ‘family’ life I shall explain why it was so hectic, but at this point that is still a work in progress. And in all honesty, that could take a very long time, if ever, to come out. All I can say is that you probably wouldn’t believe me even if I did tell you.

OMG I tend to head off on weird tangents sometimes … but back to the point I was trying to make.

Crime. It is on the increase in my country. Or is it just being reported more often in the tabloids and on the telly?

I remember a while back watching Pink Floyd’s The Wall and having the commentary on. Roger Waters and the other commentator (sorry not all that up on names at the moment so anyone who knows what I am talking about please let me know the name of the other commentary on the movie) are talking, as you do in a commentary.

They are talking about pedafiles (spelling isn’t the greatest) and how attacks on children were just as prevailant in their younger days as they are now, although they are reported more today.

I am wondering if that is what is happening now. Is there some kind of secret agenda on the table in parliament at the moment saying they need the whole of South Auckland for another motor way, so they need every single attack and crime spree from that area to be reported? Or have people in the lower socio-economic areas of our country finally decided they have had enough of being poor and are prepared to kill and maim to meet their needs?

Maybe a little of both, but I remember living in South Auckland (albeit many years ago, in a decade far far before the one we live in now) and life was always bad there. If you got on the wrong side of people, you got the bash. If you kept yourself to yourself, sometimes you would get the bash. Pretty much the locals left me alone, but it didn’t stop them from taking each other out.

It just puzzles me why in the past two weeks we have been bombarded with horror stories of what has been happening in that area for years before, during and after my time.

Any ideas or theories would be welcomed.
